The Labour Party is the current ruling party in the United Kingdom. It is a democratic socialist party led by Gordon Brown. The values Labour stands for today, social justice, a strong community and strong values, reward for hard work, decency and rights matched by responsibilities, are those which have guided it throughout its existence.

Key policies:

  • A new Australian-style points system (which began in February 2008) to ensure only those migrants we need can come to work and study in the UK.
  • Committed to providing a net further 15,000 prison places by 2014 through the largest ever prison-building programme (7,000 of which will be provided by 2010.)
  • From April 2008 every community has its own dedicated neighbourhood police team, easily contactable by the people who live in that community and working with them to agree local priorities and deal with people’s concerns.
  • We will improve the welfare and support we provide to our service men and women, their families and our veterans.
  • We are also doubling the lump sum compensation awards for the most severely injured, a measure which will make a huge and practical difference in the lives of many of our servicemen and women and their families.
  • By 2010 there will be 3,500 Children’s Centres, one in every community in England.
  • Aiming to make all new homes zero-carbon by 2015.
  • Labour is opening at least 100 new GP practices in the areas which need them most, along with 152 new GP-led health centres to be open 8am-8pm, seven days a week.
  • By April 2010, households with children will be, on average, £2,000 better off in real terms than in 1997. Households with children in the poorest fifth of the population will be, on average, £4,500 better off.We will deliver over 1,300 new carriages for our rail network between now and 2014 –nearly 100,000 more train seats.
